Maria L. and the Architecture of Absence

Maria L. and the Architecture of Absence

by Janis Freimanis

We met with photographer Maria L. on a foggy morning at a deserted Tiergarten overpass — her choice, obviously. She spoke about chasing "spaces that don’t know they’re being watched" and using expired film stock to distort time. Her newest collection, Soft Thresholds, captures that liminal buzz between familiarity and dread — a kind of architectural sleep paralysis. Spoiler: she hasn’t owned a tripod in years. "Too stable," she shrugs.
